FAQs

What are your  opening hours?
Monday to Friday 10.00am to 6pm. Saturdays 10am to 5pm.We occasionally close on holiday Mondays, but you never know, so do phone ahead to check if making a special journey. See also the sidebar on the Welcome page.

Do you make everything on the premises at The Meadows Pottery?

Yes.

Do you make pieces to order and how long does it take?

If you are thinking of ordering something it is best to come in person so we can properly discuss your requirements. There is no extra charge and no deposit required. It usually takes four to six weeks to complete an order but it can take longer and sometimes shorter, depending on the item(s) ordered and our work schedule, but if you have a specific deadline, let us know and we will see what we can do.

Can you make pots for me in any colour I like?
The extreme nature of heating and vitrification involved in the firing process means that glazes cannot be mixed like paints. The ten glazes we have developed over the past twenty years give a wide range of possible finishes, and our range of more than twenty coloured clay slips give us even more possibilities.More often than not we can reach a practical solution and we are happy to discuss your wishes.

Does the ware carry a potter’s mark?

All our pots are marked with impressed stamps, ‘Meadows Pottery Edinburgh” or occasionally ‘MP’. We will also stamp ‘JS’ or ‘PT’ on some pieces. Everything has a ‘Junko Shibe’ or ‘Paul Tebble’ address label attached, depending on who made it. See “British Studio Potters’ Marks“, A & C Black Publishers Ltd; illustrated edition (31 Aug 1999).

Do you design everything yourselves?

Yes, every pot we throw is unique, designed and made by us from start to finish. But we are happy for customers to bring in their own ideas, photos or examples for us to base an order upon.

Can your pots go in the dishwasher, oven or microwave?

All our ware is dishwasher safe and microwavable. We are unable to describe any pieces as “ovenproof” due to the prohibitive costs of the required testing procedure. So, if you were, against our advice, to put any of our wares in the oven, it would be at your own risk.

How do you fire the pots?

We fire all our pots in our ROHDE KE250S electric kiln, a wonder of modern, energy efficient, firing technology. It is a pleasure to use such  an intelligently designed machine.

Have you inspired any fictional psychopaths?

Well… yes… but if we tell you, we’ll have to kill  you. (And very slowly, says the author…)
